Having gotten approval from both the co-founder, Joseph Malone, and his son, Patrick Sheck, the managing director, I chose my dance studio as the venue for my next event. Outside the entrance, I set up my stand, filled with brochures, books, stress-relief toys, and interactive activities tailored for dancers of all ages, parents, and teachers alike.
I developed five different brochures tailored for teens and dancers, parents, children, teachers/coaches, and one promoting body positivity. Additionally, I brought useful books and workbooks suitable for everyone, with a specific focus on children and teens. I aimed to cater to the diverse age groups that attend the studio, including parents of children and teens and provided informative materials tailored to each demographic. I also provided stickers with positive affirmations and materials for kids and teens to create their stickers with uplifting messages.
In setting up my stand, I wanted to prevent eating disorders and spread awareness of body positivity, especially since dancers are a vulnerable community for eating disorders.
Dancers are frequently instructed on how to position and present their bodies, as well as on their appearance. They also have mirrors constantly surrounding them so dancers are aware of their bodies at a very young age. I wanted young dancers to grow up loving their bodies and understanding that all body types are unique. I sought to raise awareness among both dancers and parents about the signs and symptoms of eating disorders, aiming to prevent their occurrence. Additionally, I provided brochures to the coaches, recognizing that teachers can foster a supportive and nurturing environment and significantly influence the well-being of dancers.
