In all types of sports, athletes are required to push their bodies to the limit, demanding strength, agility, and endurance. However, young male and female athletes are often at a greater risk of developing an eating disorder, particularly in a sport that focuses on personal performance, appearance, and strict diet or weight requirements. Research indicates that up to 45% of female athletes and 19% of male athletes are affected by eating disorders.
Especially in sports like dance, young girls become acutely aware of their bodies early on. They are told to be aware of the space their body takes up and to maintain a certain physical appearance, which can lead to struggles with self-esteem and body image. In addition to dance, sports such as gymnastics, figure skating, and wrestling also have high incidences of eating disorders due to their emphasis on leanness and weight classes. Coaches and trainers play a crucial role in either mitigating or exacerbating these issues, depending on their approach to diet and body image. Effective intervention and support systems are essential in preventing and treating eating disorders among young athletes.
