Neurodivergent individuals, such as those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and others, face a high risk of developing eating disorders. Studies indicate that up to 20% of people with ASD show symptoms of disordered eating, compared to 5% of the general population.
This heightened susceptibility can stem from factors like sensory, difficulties with social interactions and communication, and challenges with executive functioning. Research suggests that neurodivergent individuals may struggle with recognizing and regulating their eating behaviors, leading to an increased likelihood of developing some type of eating disorder. Moreover, the needs and experiences of neurodivergent people are often overlooked or misunderstood resulting in inadequate support. Due to this, there is a need for increased awareness to address eating disorders in neurodivergent communities.
